Business Planning

Step One – The Planning Facilitation Session

A cross-section of members and other interested parties that have a vested interest in your organisation’s future

To start your planning process you must first gather the thoughts, ideas and aspirations of your member. Why? Well, if you want the plan to succeed it must be a shared vision. Without this first step you run the risk of your members not taking ownership of the plan and you won’t get very far on your own.

During this session we will investigate the following.

Mission / Purpose – A clear simple statement as to why you exist.

Purpose – Three or four strong statements as to what you are trying to achieve.

Values – Three or four strong statements that you will not compromise on. This will help you in tough decision making.

Major Goals – A list of those things that you are trying to achieve.

Surrounding Factors – Are those things that surround your organisation that could assist or stand in the way of you achieving your goals. These include the current environment and future assumptions, people you need to communicate to, your current position, who your competitors are and what resources you have to work with.

SWOT Analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and weaknesses).
At the end of this session we will have defined 4-6 Major Goals your organisation wants to achieve. Easy….

Step Two – Performance Indicators/Measures

Explicit statements that define how success is to be measured, and identify the criteria, or benchmarks, to be used in judging success

This part of the process will take place with a smaller group of the decision makers and people that have a proven track record of achieving.  This session(s) will decide how the goals we agreed upon are to be achieved. This leads to….

Step Three – Strategic/Operational Plan

Strategies are those things you are going to put in place to shape your future

This session(s) continues to work with a select group. Strategies will be agreed upon and transferred to an operational plan. The operational plan lists the various actions that are necessary to achieve the strategies. It will be specific as to what is has to be done. It will more than likely cover the next 3 years and just as importantly help shape our future budgets. In saying that, it is not all about expenses all plans should aim to increase your bottom line figure.

This Operational Plan is a document that should be referred to on a regular basis within the committee room.

This plan is to be shared not left in drawer. Spread the word that work has to be done, put it on you notice board, your newsletter, your website.  Amazing things can come from people once you tell them what you want.
